Litany for Alice Munro

That promises form walls of light
in snow-blind air

That desire is caught between itself
and an unturned page

That the dreams of a young woman shall be twisted
and twisted like wire

That ignorance will laugh at one
as well as at many

That the smile of a neighbour at your door
is not without meaning

That confession in stories is comfortless;
they are unforgiving
